  • We wanted to investigate running our new portal software on Linux on System z because we have had great success running other Java portals on the platform using the IBM JVM.

Unfortunately, the product as shipped by the vendor is only supported running on the Oracle JVM.  Wanting to keep our options open, we investigated running it on Linux on System z (SLES11 SP1) under the IBM J9 VM JRE 1.6.  To get it working, we had to work around a few issues with JSVC, the SSL KeyManagerFactory and vendor-specific code references to the Sun/Oracle JVM library.

Finally, I will end with a discussion on how all this fun got us thinking about IBM’s backing of the OpenJDK and what that will mean for our future Linux on System z Java endeavors.
