Handouts
  • Gen Y and IT (3.8 MB)
  • Earlier this year CompTIA surveyed a sample of 700 respondents who work in an office environment with some form of technology for its Generational Research on Technology and its Impact in the Workplace study. The sample was segmented to include respondents from different age groups and generational cohorts from a variety of industry sectors. Based on their responses, we’ve learned how Gen Y is likely to affect the workplace in years to come. Some of the interesting findings uncovered about Gen Y workers in the study include:

    1. They think their employers are tech-savvy.
    2. They work on smart phones, even if the phone is not company-issued.
    3. They are twice as likely to use an alternative word processing or productivity application.
    4. They are more likely to participate in voluntary training.
    5. They prefer that training to be online.
    6. They want ownership of their technology devices and when they can upgrade.
    7. They seek IT support from social media.
    8. They need the Internet to function.
    9. They use Facebook for work purposes.
    10. They think companies that don’t offer telecommuting are old-fashioned.

Todd Thibodeaux will delve into how companies can adapt their IT and HR policies and procedures to benefit from the changes Gen Y will bring.
