Linux on System z running under z/VM revived virtualization on the mainframe. Virtualization has changed storage device management with Virtual/Thin Provisioning to increase storage utilization and simplify capacity management. Thin Provisioning lets organizations present large amounts of capacity to a Linux on System z environment and then consume space only as needed from a shared pool which is one of the factors of improving total cost of ownership when using this technology. This session focuses on the benefits and considerations for combining Thin Provisioning with Linux on System z. It describes how to provide a storage infrastructure for organizations that want to simplify their storage management and maximize their capacity utilization.
