Biographical Sketch: Carl Parris is a Senior Technical Staff Member in System z Strategy, Design and Performance Analysis. He has been with IBM for 30 years and has been working on the mainframe and System z for all of that time. His primary focus has been on systems performance with a focus on operational performance and benchmark performance. He was the IBM mainframe representative to the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) for 4 years and has helped to define industry standard benchmarks. He has also lead on a number of internal SW performance projects on MVS/ESA and Data in Memory, Unix Systems Services and Websphere on both z/OS and zLinux. More recently he has shifted his attention to future mainframe strategy and design and the optimization of business analytics on zEnterprise. This will be the focus of his presentation. He has been exploring the convergence of predictive analytics in commercial computing environments and the requirements this places on system hardware and software infrastructure. Many Fortune 500 companies host their mission critical OLTP applications and data on z. There is great potential to leverage this data to provide ‘real time’ analytics. He will discuss some of the current activities to integrate data intensive and numerically intensive computing into the zEnterprise ecosystem and the challenges that need to be addressed to enable best of breed analytics solutions on System z.
