Avoidance of Self-Inflicted Wounds for Technicians

Thursday, August 5, 2010: 11:00 AM-12:00 PM
Room 208 (Hynes Convention Center)
Speaker: David Kreuter (Stream Foundry Inc)

Most of us in the technical world have experienced the self inflicted wound. This presentation will focus on some of the errors commonly made in z/VM and Linux on System z including system and networking environments and how to avoid them. Problem avoidance techniques ranging from the holistic, heuristic to the just plain common sense approach will be discussed. Come and see what the acronym YGYBYF means.

Some of the self inflicted cases that will be discusses include not desk check configuration files, shoddy documentation practices, housekeeping glibness managing files, return code ignorance, and endless patching of the house of cards.  z/VM and Linux on Systems z specifics exemplified like SYSTEM CONFIG tailoring, forgetting the root password, staying on back level CP and Linux kernel releases and overloaded Linux virtual machines.
