  • Most likely you have heard of the z/VM Operating System, IBM's premier virtualization product on z Enterprise, but perhaps your initial encounters with z/VM have scared you away from doing anything with the system. Certainly understanding things like the Control Program, CMS and virtual machines can be intimidating. This hands-on workshop is intended for people with no z/VM background. The purpose of the lab is to introduce you to the z/VM operating system from an “end-user” perspective. You will experience logging into a virtual machine and have the opportunity to execute various CP and CMS commands that will help you become familiar with z/VM and form the foundation for working as a z/VM System Programmer. You will also be introduced to XEDIT, the editor included with the CMS operating system. Along the way, we will cover the basic structure of z/VM, and put the commands you are working with into the larger system context. You will learn about things such as the control program, user directory, CMS, service machines, and much more. This workshop is an excellent place to start if you are interested in z/VM, and also if you are planning to attend the z/VM SSI Installation, Migration, or Upgrade hands-on workshop.
