Handouts
  • Oracle StorageTek SL8500: Partitioning to Meet User Needs (651.7 kB)
  • The Oracle StorageTek SL8500 is a quite capable automated tape storage system that can range from 1448 cartridges to 100,880 cartridges.  However, raw storage capacity is only a part of the management equation.  One must have a solid management plan to make the best of this investment.  In some cases that means isolating workloads to improve performance or sharing aone or more large libraries between different operating enviornments.

This session covers the various ways that the SL8500 can be partitioned to achieve that optimum configuration using hardware partitioning or software partitioning or a combination of both. The goal is to enable the user of the SL8500 libraries to achive great performance while managing the bottom line.

The speaker has many years of working with users of the library to achieve those management goals and was instumental in the development of the software partitioning methodologies.  In addition, he also has a long career involving the hardware side of the library environment.  Now a full time consultant and educator in this area, his depth of experience and knowledge is a plus to any user of the solution.
