14680: z/OS V2R1 Communications Server: Shared Memory Communications - RDMA (SMC-R), Part 1 of 2

Tuesday, March 11, 2014: 9:30 AM-10:30 AM
Grand Ballroom Salon G (Anaheim Marriott Hotel)
Speaker: Gus Kassimis(IBM Corporation)
Handouts
  • Shared Memory Communications - RDMA (SMC-R) Part 1 of 2 (3.4 MB)
  • z/OS V2R1 Communications Server -- along with zEnterprise EC12 and zEnterprise BC12 systems with the 10 GbE RoCE Express feature -- support a new communications protocol called Shared Memory Communications - RDMA (SMC-R), where GbE is Gigabit Ethernet, RMDA is Remote Direct Memory Access, and RoCE is RDMA over Converged Ethernet.

This new protocol is designed to provide highly efficient, low-latency data transfer between z/OS systems over RoCE in a manner transparent to socket applications.

In Part 1 of this two-part session, we will look at how SMC-R works, its benefits and requirements, and some early performance benchmarks. Don't miss Part 2.
