In this session the speaker will provide an introduction and update to the z/OS Capacity Provisioning function. For many z/OS installations it is essential to control cost via the System z defined capacity and LPAR group capacity facilities. Balancing cost control with service level agreements has been a manual activity, tainted with uncertainty, at times. With z/OS 2.1 Capacity Provisioning is planned to extend its policy-based management capabilities to fully integrate management of defined capacity and group capacity with the existing On/Off CoD provisioning. Additional planned enhancements include support for manual provisioning of additional processor types, such as IFLs, an option to add manually activated On/Off CoD resources to automated management, and better reporting for On/Off CoD record capacity.
