IMS 13 enhances the DL/I ICAL support to allow IMS applications to synchronously call each other. In other words, in addition to "calling out" to a remote program or WSDL, IMS transactions can "call in" to the IMS environment to invoke other IMS transactions and wait for a reply. The called or target program can be an MPP, JMP, IFP, or MD BMP in the same or different IMS. Synchronous program switch (SPS) support has many benefits including modernization of the application infrastructure as well as support for an internal service flow template that allows multiple IMS transactions to synchronously participate in a business process. This presentation discusses the new support and also provides a look at the considerations that must be understood in this environment.
