Technology has been developed for Linux on System z running in a z/VM virtual machine, and included in RedHat 6.1 and above and SUSE SLES11 SP2 where Linux will receive and respond to Special Messages (SMSG) from other z/VM virtual machines. This technology exploits the Linux udev facility as well as the z/VM Inter User Communication Vehicle (IUCV). This presentation will briefly review Linux udev and specifically writing udev rules, explore the new SMSG facility, walk thru various coding examples, and then demonstrate how it is being used on the Community Development System for Linux (CDSL) as part of the system automation. If network access is available, a demo of the technology will be provided. By the end of this session you will be familiar with this technology, understand examples of how to exploit it, and hopefully be motivated to enhance your Linux on System z environment by using this technology in your shop
