Application Backup and Restore using Fast Replication Services

Coordinated and consistent application backups can be performed fast and effectively by exploiting your storage system’s fast-replication capabilities.  Fast Replication Services (FRS) is a callable component used by several backup and restore products to transparently integrate with storage-based fast-replication facilities.  FRS supports IBM FlashCopy, EMC TimeFinder, HDS ShadowImage, and STK SnapShot fast-replication facilities.  Backups made using FRS can remain on disk or they can be offloaded to and restored from tape automatically.  FRS manages the fast-replication target storage pools automatically and it inventories disk-based and offloaded backups in its repository. An ISPF interface is used to access the repository to provide backup visibility.  FRS can determine the fastest way to restore an application and it will generate appropriate restore jobs to restore entire applications or selected application datasets from disk, using storage-based fast-replication, or from tape.  Backup products that use Fast Replication Services will be referenced to show how they can reduce CPU utilization, eliminate backup windows, reduce recovery time, and promote high availability in your processing environment.
