Legacy profilers can be considered "State" profilers, in that they periodically stop an address space, gather the "state" of that address space and restart it.  This legacy technology is highly evolved, and State profilers have effectively BEEN the profiler marketplace for many years. Until now, that is.

z/XPF, in contrast, is the world's first "Event" profiler.  Instead of monitoring the address space directly, z/XPF instead gathers information constantly at the processor level, gathering FAR more information than State profilers with NO presence in the target address space, and no hooks to the operating system.

This exciting, new technology allows z/XPF to "see" things that State profilers are functionally "blind" to, yields far more granular data, and reports on events that systems-level programmers and senior analysts will find compelling.
