As the level of virtualization increases, so does the management requirements. Capacity planning when operating many servers on the same set of physical CPUs at high utilization is a different challenge than operating discrete servers with dedicated resource at very low utilizations. Many installations have virtualized thousands of Linux servers to z/VM, reducing overall costs of IT with reductions in power requirements, footprint, software costs and management costs. This presentation will provide case studies of some of these installations, showing real data on capacity requirements, configurations being used, people requirements, and how these installations perform capacity planning for large numbers of virtualized linux servers.
