Orphaned Control Intervals (CA) have found a home. You can now avoid unnecessarily extending data sets and planned outages for VSAM data set reorganizations. A new function, CA Reclaim, introduced in z/O V1R12 provides improved performance by reducing extends, minimizes space utilization, and increases application availability by avoiding planned outages for VSAM key sequenced data set reorganizations. We will discuss what causes orphaned CA's, how they are now reclaimed, and what must be done to use this new function.
