Accessible Density: Learning to Live with High Capacity Disk Drives

Tuesday, August 3, 2010: 3:00 PM-4:00 PM
Room 309 (Hynes Convention Center)
Speaker: John Baker (IntelliMagic)

One of the challenges for many shops today is the increasing size of available hard drives for their enterprise storage environments.  Long gone are the easily managed 18 and 36 GB drives; fading fast are the stalwart 73's and becoming scarce are the 146's as well.

Whether we like it or not, we are going to be running our "loved" aps on 300, 450 GB and larger drives very soon.

Solid State (SSD or Flash) drives offer a desirable alternative but their costs are still prohibitive for large scale implementation.

The price point for SATA drives is attractive but what about performance?

This session provides a vendor-neutral discussion of enterprise storage today with practical advice on how to maintain - or even improve - the ongoing balance of price vs performance.
