  • Adopting "green" data center practices can yield tens of thousands of dollars, and in large centers, hundreds of thousands of dollars in cost savings every year. The IT industry spends over $ 4.5 Billion a year on powering and cooling our machines, and those costs are increasing at over 12 % per year. By adopting various "green" practices, many of which are based on common sense about data center layout and usage, data center operational costs can not only be controlled, but reduced.

This presentation presents some of the key factors in data center energy usage, highlights key things to look out for, how to lower energy usage, and describes the key aspects of how to monitor and control the energy usage in your data center. It also describes tradeoffs that can be performed with Virtualization to reduce costs.

Analyzing the energy usage in your data center is not rocket science anymore.

A number of new monitoring and control frameworks are incorporating SOA techniques and Web 2.0 techniques, and will be discussed. These new tools make the data easy to understand and highlights the key areas, rather than drowning in scads of monitored data. This knowledge can then be used to reduced energy consumption.
