STP Overview and Planning Considerations

Thursday, August 5, 2010: 1:30 PM-2:30 PM
Room 311 (Hynes Convention Center)
Speaker: Greg Hutchinson (IBM Corporation)
Handouts
  • STP Planning Considerations - Session 7509.pdf (717.6 kB)
  • Server Time Protocol (STP), a time synchronization facility for System z is designed to provide time synchronization for multiple IBM System z10™, System z9™ and zSeries™ servers, and is the follow-on to the Sysplex Timer (9037-002). IBM has announced that the next server after z10 will not support attachment to the Sysplex Timer. It is therefore important to start planning the migration to STP. Customers with existing External Time Reference (ETR) networks can concurrently migrate to STP. This session will describe the key functional capabilities of STP, the configurations STP is designed to support, and the hardware and software planning considerations required for implementing STP. A discussion of External Time Source planning will also be included to help you understand how you can coordinate time accuracy across System z and non-System z platforms.
