Maximizing Mainframe Storage Efficiencies with Deduplication

Wednesday, August 4, 2010: 11:00 AM-12:00 PM
Room 104 (Hynes Convention Center)
Speakers: Brian Kithcart (EMC Corporation) and Richard Colarusso (EMC Corp)

Protecting Mainframe tape data presents some very unique challenges based on the way the Mainframe utilizes tape in its day to day processing and the many different ways tape is used as an output & input device.  Mainframe tape data can be very highly interactive and these considerations must be taken into account.  The explosion in the amount of data to manage and the need to retain more information for regulatory requirements can make meeting backup service level agreements almost impossible. Coupled with space-saving technology such as data deduplication, backup to disk can be a high performing, reliable and cost-effective alternative to mainframe physical or virtual tape libraries. This technical session will highlight deduplication approaches and technology considerations, recent mainframe trends associated with moving from tape to disk for more reliable and efficient backup and DR processes, as well as compelling implementation use cases.

Attend this session and learn how you can:

•             Eliminate traditional tape handling to reduce cost and complexity

•             Reduce bandwidth costs

•             Restore in seconds and minutes compared to days and weeks

Tracks: Enterprise Data Center Management, IT & the Bottom Line, IT Management, Operations Support and Storage Administration
