  • TCP/IP is the protocol of the past, present, and future of network computing! That broad statement accurately describes the importance of TCP/IP to networking. With its basis as the access mechanism to the Internet, everyone needs to understand the fundamentals of TCP/IP. This session will help you out. First, a discussion of the TCP/IP protocol architecture and how it has evolved will provide the background required to understand the basics of TCP/IP.

One of the strengths of TCP/IP is its core set of applications allowing communication between different machines -- applications that are needed by everyone: mail, file transfer, remote login, etc. The discussion of these applications will focus on the core components and how vendors have enhanced the basic applications to fit within existing work habits. This session will conclude with a review of the Internet and all the basic terms and elements that Internet networking brings to the table. Whether you are an old hand or new to the Internet or TCP/IP protocol, this session will provide the background you need to understand this communications environment.
